After a 30-year career as an interior designer, Joan Portman founded the Healing Environments program in 2008 at St. Mary Medical Center in Pennsylvania. This program enlisted the skills of over 350 off-site volunteers who created afghans, shawls and many other comfort items offered as gifts while visiting with patients.
